Half of Brits who care for an adult relative say they’re depressed

Research from Kantar Health has found that 53% of people in the UK who care for an adult relative would describe themselves as having some sort of depression, with 15% having moderately severe or severe depression.

The data reveals that carers are much more likely to have depression than non-caregivers. 8.3% of the UK population say they provide care for an adult relative, that's a total of 4.1 million carers.

Globally, caregivers in China and Italy have the most severe depression mean scores, with carers in China (35%) most likely to have moderate to severe depression. In contrast, caregivers in Japan reported the lowest levels of moderate to severe depression.

Alzheimer's disease/dementia is the most cited condition of the patients being cared for in the UK (20%), followed by osteoarthritis (16%) and then cancer (14%). The average British carer is 50 years old, and more likely to female (56%) than male (44%).

Caregivers are most involved with tasks such as transportation, meals, housework and medication, with caregivers in the UK and US having the largest role. Despite the burdens, caregiving is important for many adults, for example, UK carers strongly agreed that "caring for the patient is important to me."
