Dixons Carphone Christmas trading statement published

The electrical and telecommunications retailer said like-for-like revenue was up 6% in the 10 weeks to 6 January 2018. The company also announced the appointment of Alex Baldock to succeed Sebastian James as Chief Executive in April

‘Fox / Sky deal not in the public interest’, says the CMA

Competition and Markets Authority provisionally found the proposed acquisition of Sky by 21st Century Fox was ‘not in the public interest due to media plurality concerns’. The CMA set out a series of potential remedies for addressing its concerns before it sends a final report to Culture Secretary Matt Hancock by 1 May. He will then make the final decision on the proposal

ONS releases monthly unemployment figures

Office for National Statistics figures showed that unemployment fell by 3,000 in the three months to November to 1.44 million, with the unemployment rate at 4.3%. Average weekly earnings fell by 0.5% including bonuses, and by 0.2% excluding bonuses when adjusted for price inflation

UK growth figures released

Office of National Statistics preliminary data showed that Gross Domestic Product increased by 0.5% in the final quarter of 2017 and by 1.8% for the whole of 2017. Revised figures will be published on 22 February
